    GOING IN

    Going InA memoir

The stories never stop, they keep coming until you have a picture of the person even if you’ve never met them.  Inside the stations I’d listen, not opening my mouth until asked. I would figure out who was liked and hated, and I knew who would go in. That was the most important part of any firefighters reputation.  If they went inside a burning structure and crawled through the blackness into the heat, no matter what they did from then on mattered.  For twenty-three years I’ve lived one-third of my life inside an engine house. I found my first burned body before I was old enough to drink, watched the guys prance around in tiger-striped bikini underwear and fought the city fathers put in place to protect us.  This is my story.
